The Bolex 16mm Camera

Load the Camera

  • Wind the camera.
  • Open the cover.
  • Check and clean gate, blow out dust.

  • Insert upper spool.
  • Trim film end.
  • Close loop formers.
  • Thread film under sprocket.
    • Run camera. Make sure film forms two loops.
    • Open loop formers and close pressure plate.
    • Insert film into takeup spool slot, and turn spool to take up slack.
    • Run briefly to check, and close cover.
    • Run up to "0" on foot counter.

Prepare the Camera

  • Set speed to normal 24 FPS.
    (If shooting slow or fast motion, adjust exposure accordingly.)
  • Open variable shutter lever (UP).
  • Insert empty filter frame (or 85 filter) in the slot behind the lens.
  • Check viewfinder focus adjustment.

 
 
 
 
 
 
 
  • Wind camera before every shot.
  • Open aperture to focus. Then close aperture to correct f-stop.

 
 

Take a Light Reading

  • Set the centre window over the EI (or ISO or ASA) of the film stock.
  • Hold meter in the position of the subject.
  • Press and hold button to check footcandles.
  • Set footcandles to arrow.
  • Use high slide and orange "H" arrow if outdoors.

  • Opposite the 1/80 sec. shutter speed, read the f-stop on the bottom scale.
