The next-generation JK Wrangler is larger than the TJ, with a
2-in. longer wheelbase and 3.4-in. wider track, though the two-door model is
actually 2.5 in. shorter in overall length than the TJ, allowing for better
approach and departure angles. The JK is offered in a
short-wheelbase 2-door and a long-wheelbase Unlimited 4-door, both in X, Sahara
and Rubicon trim levels. The Unlimited has 20.6 in. added to the JK's 95.4-in.
wheelbase, and offers an option of 2x4 rear wheel drive. A 3.8-L EGH V6
producing 205 HP will be the base engine, replacing the venerable AMC straight-6
engine. The 2.8-L VM Motori turbodiesel straight-4 used in the Liberty is
offered as an option outside of the U.S. A six-speed manual transmission is
standard, with a four-speed automatic transmission offered as an option. The
lower two levels have the Command-Trac NV241 part-time two-speed transfer case
with an optional Trak-Lok limited-slip differential, while the Rubicon uses a
Rock-Trak version of the NV241 with electronic front- and rear-axle locking
differentials. All versions offer off-road tuned ABS and traction control system
with electronic limited slip differential. A convertible soft top is standard
equipment, and an optional 3-piece modular hardtop allows the sides to be
removed. Although the doors can still be removed, power windows and door locks
will be offered for the first time. This is also the first generation of the
Wrangler to have a change in the tail lamps.
