Cultural Studies Graduate Program

Queen's University's Cultural Studies Program has admitted its first MA and PhD students for September 2009. The 65 associated faculty from 20 departments have formed a program that will integrate the range of theoretical and practical approaches used in cultural studies, and will foster scholarship in both historical and contemporary fields of research.

The MA and PhD programs have been designed around four fields:

  • 1) Communication, Media and Technologies,
  • 2) Globalization, Nationalisms and Cultural Citizenship
  • 3) Social Movements
  • 4) Bodies and Identities
Both the MA and PhD programs will require coursework and research. However, these programs will also offer students the option of pursuing a practicum component. The practicum will allow those who choose to do so to develop their cultural practice (e.g. filmmaking) or to engage in community work as part of their studies. Graduates of the degree programs will be prepared to continue in academic work or to work as critically engaged citizens in a variety of social and cultural fora.
